Why US Bathrooms Don’t Have Bidets | Tech Insider Aug 22, 2019 | 3:48
There are many personal and environmental benefits of bidets. For example, a bidet can be especially helpful for people suffering from certain conditions such as hemorrhoids, Crohn’s disease, and irritable bowel syndrome. A squirt of water from a bidet won’t irritate the bum as will dry, scratchy toilet paper.
Bidets Are Useful For Elderly, Disabled or Injured
Bidets aren’t just for the elderly, disabled or injured. Young people who are environmentally conscious find them to be useful too. This device can give older people their independence back, at least in the bathroom. It can be embarrassing to have an assistant help out when it’s time to go potty. A bidet makes it easy to get cleaned up, and there’s no assistance needed.
Bidets are an Environmentally Friendly Choice
On average each American uses approximately 57 sheets of toilet paper every single day. This adds up to over 3 million tons of toilet paper used in the USA each year, and requires 54 million trees that are cut down. Even if tree farms are used, 50% of the trees needed to supply Americans with toilet paper will come from virgin forests.
A bidet can greatly reduce the toilet paper that is needed when you use the bathroom and this can be very beneficial to the environment. The 57 sheets of toilet paper used daily on average by each American requires 3.7 gallons of water to create.
The bleaching process used to manufacture toilet paper is very damaging to the earth and to people. Bleaching produces a byproduct called dioxin which is a cancer causing substance in humans and animals, and chlorine products are also used which leave behind toxins in the toilet paper and harm the earth. A bidet is a more environmentally friendly choice.
Bidets Can Save Money
Using a bidet can be a great way to save money because a bidet will eliminate the need for excess toilet paper. Over time that can translate into a couple of hundred dollars saved each year. Even if you don't have space for a stand alone fixture, there are a lot of toilet seat replacements with a bidet built in.
Bidets are becoming more affordable with some costing less than $200 at Amazon. In addition to saving money on toilet paper purchases, a bidet will eliminate the need for excess toilet paper use.
On average, a family goes through a roll of toilet paper in just three days. It’s already easy to see how the savings could add up. How long do you think it would take you pay for a bidet by reducing your TP use?
